Free Lung Screening at Tampines 1!

COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which is a common disease caused by smoking.

16 November 2011 was World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day and in support of this movement, a free lung screening was held at Tampines 1 for our shoppers. Through this event, we hope to raise awareness of this disease and for our shoppers to seek advice from the medical professionals present.

COPD is a common disease caused by smoking and the disease can be detected by undergoing a Spirometry test – a test that measures how well we breathe. Our shopper taking a deep breath and exhaling into the tube.

COPD is characterized by a gradual loss of lung function, chronic airflow limitation, shortness of breath (or dyspnoea), cough, wheezing and increased sputum (mucus or phlegm) production. These symptoms, in particular breathlessness, can restrict a patient’s ability to perform normal daily activities.

The Spirometry test is painless and usually takes less than 10 minutes. Results were explained to participants.

Those who are 35 years and older who are either smokers or ex-smokers are encouraged to get screened for COPD. The event was conducted by Boehringer Ingelheim, a pharmaceutical company, in collaboration with Changi General Hospital and Pfizer.

Many of our shoppers took the opportunity to take the test. Hope this free health screening benefitted our shoppers. Do check our blog or facebook for more updates of such events.

Love, Tampines 1
